Editor’s note: Dr. Hettler passed away on November 24, 2024, just a few short weeks after Shawn Gilbert interviewed her for this article.

Dr. Hettler’s optometric career began at The Ohio State University when she earned her bachelor’s degree in physiological optics in 1976, followed by her Doctor of Optometry degree in 1980. Since then, her commitment to public health optometry and community service has been a hallmark of her career, reflecting her deep-seated belief in the power of vision care to transform lives.

Prior to her passing on November 24, 2024, Dr. Hettler made her impact with a remarkable act of generosity. Through her estate, she established the Debbie L. Hettler Endowed Scholarship Fund with a transformative gift of $2.2 million. This fund will provide two full tuition scholarships annually to students at The Ohio State University College of Optometry. These scholarships are specifically aimed at students who demonstrate a keen interest in public health optometry and have a proven track record of community service.

This endowment is not only the largest gift in the history of the College of Optometry but also a significant investment in the future of the profession. By supporting students who are passionate about public health and community service, Dr. Hettler ensured that her legacy of care and compassion will continue to influence the field for generations to come.

Dr. Hettler’s gift is more than a financial contribution; it is a testament to her lifelong dedication to the principles of public health and service. It underscores the importance of nurturing future leaders in optometry who are committed to making a difference in their communities.

“Dr. Hettler was well known for being a trailblazer at the intersection of optometry and public health. She’s even better known for being a high-achieving leader. But she’s best known for generously giving her time as a mentor, educator, and clinician,” said Karla Zadnik, OD, PhD. “We are honored that she chose to endow a scholarship that will make it possible for Ohio State Optometry students to follow in her public health optometry footsteps.”

As the Ohio State and optometric communities celebrate this historic gift, Dr. Hettler’s impact will be felt far beyond the walls of Fry Hall. Her vision and generosity are paving the way for a new generation of optometrists who will carry forward her mission of service and excellence.

In honoring Dr. Hettler, we recognize not only her outstanding contributions to optometry but also her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others. Her legacy is a shining example of how one individual’s dedication and generosity can create a lasting impact on an entire profession.
